Pests can be such a nuisance. Not only are they ugly to look at, having them around your house means damage to your property as well as your health — yes, that’s right! Your health is more important than anything you have.

Here are some of the diseases that can be caused by pests that may be living in your house:

1. Allergic reactions

Bedbugs can cause severe allergic reactions in some people. Although not proven to cause any other disease, these allergic reactions can be very annoying to some people. Initially, a large wheal is formed which causes immense itching. These bites can get infected secondarily is someone fails to keep the bites clean and disinfected. This can occur especially in children and old people that have low immunity.

2. Molds

Termites disperse molds. Some molds species are more dangerous than others and can cause serious illnesses. When termites chew on wood they disperse molds which can be inhaled by people. Molds cause allergies, skin diseases, fungal infections and mycotoxin toxicity. Allergies can be exacerbated.

Mild asthma can become chronic with more severe symptoms. Once the spores of molds are inhaled, they can grow into lungs, which is a disease called Aspergillosis. Scary?

3. Lymphocytic Choriomeningitis

This is a rodent borne viral infection. The primary host of this disease is the common house mouse. Human infection can occur after exposure to fresh urine, droppings, saliva or nesting materials of infected rodents. Exposure to these things can occur through broken skin or a direct mouse bite from an infected rodent.

The infection causes fever, general ill-being, sore throat, cough, etc. The second phase of the disease causes meningitis. The disease is usually not fatal and can be treated with supportive care.

4. Tularemia

This is a disease of animals and humans caused by a bacterium. Humans can become infected through many routes including skin contact with animals. The type of infection that occurs with tularemia depends upon its mode of infection but all forms of tularemia are accompanied by high grade fever.

Tularemia can spread from handling of sick and dead animals such as rodents. That is why it’s important to get rid of them from your home!

5. Salmonella infection

Mice and rodents are frequent carriers of Salmonella, a bacteria that causes gastroenteritis. Spread of infections to humans occurs through contaminated water and food. The infection causes severe diarrhea and is treated with supportive care. Many times pets die because of Salmonella infection.

6. Hentavirus Pulmonary Syndrome

Infection with Hentavirus can cause HPS, a disease carried by mice. This disease is potentially fatal. Humans become infected through contact with rodents infected with the virus or their waste products.

Early symptoms include fatigue, fever and muscle aches. The lungs eventually fill with fluid which causes difficulty in breathing. There is no specific cure or treatment of the disease. It is hence important to keep homes clean from all kinds of pests.
